Twitter makes public Russia, Iran meddling tweet trove

Twitter раскрыл аккаунты связанные с вмешательством в выборы в США

IRA allegedly ran information campaigns on several social media platforms to undermine the political process in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. "The trolls encapsulated the twin challenges of online anonymity - since they were able to operate under false personas - and online "filter bubbles", using positive feedback loops to make their audiences ever more radical", the Digital Forensic Research Lab said in a Medium post.

"These large datasets comprise 3,841 accounts affiliated with the IRA, originating in Russian Federation, and 770 other accounts, potentially originating in Iran", the microblogging website said.

Facebook has uncovered similar efforts and has stepped up its efforts to curb foreign influence.

According to the statement, these accounts were distributed to more than 10 million messages and over 2 million images, animated images and videos.

The messages were posted from 2013 to 2018 and include references to the USA presidential election and the UK's European Union referendum.

Twitter also shared roughly 1.1 million tweets from Iran with the Atlantic Council, which said it could not fully attribute the accounts to the country's government in its own report Wednesday.

According to initial analysis by the Atlantic Council, the Russian operation mostly used events in the United Kingdom to polarise communities in the US.

On 23 June 2016, the day of the European Union referendum, Russian Federation mobilised its army of trolls, which at one stage included 3,800 accounts. It is evident that Twitter's entire team can not possibly curate all the accounts and tweets, considering, many tweets get left out when users do not report them. Often, these accounts served to amplify state-run media, retweeting their content and linking back to Iranian news stories, DFR Lab found.

With Twitter coming under scrutiny for its failure to stop the spread of misinformation during the election, the microblogging site, earlier this year, committed to the US Congress and the public to provide regular updates and information regarding its investigation into foreign interference in political conversations on Twitter. At one point in August, the account tweeted in support of an unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate in MI whose family has roots in Egypt. Others sought to "blend into USA anti-Trump communities", Atlantic Council found. "These types of tactics have been around for far longer than Twitter has existed - they will adapt and change as the geopolitical terrain evolves worldwide and as new technologies emerge", the social media giant added.

The tweets made public by Twitter either insult or praise certain election candidates, activists and other influential targets or topics with charged rhetoric.

"It is clear that information operations and coordinated inauthentic behavior will not cease", Twitter said. "Consumers have a right to have more information about the things they see that are presented to them".
