Typhoon pummels Japan; flights cancelled, trains shut down

'Very strong' typhoon Trami churns towards Japan - The Jakarta Post

Kansai International Airport said it will close its two runways from 11 a.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday as the typhoon is expected to come closest to the airport, located on a man-made island in Osaka Bay.

Farms and homes in Miyazaki on the southern main island of Kyushu were flooded as Typhoon Trami swept across southwestern Japan.

Images received by Stars and Stripes from around the island revealed devastation of all sorts: Flooding caused by storm surge along the coastline, damaged vessels, overturned vehicles, trees, power lines and branches blown down and buildings damaged and collapsed. Jebi was considered to be the strongest storm to hit the nation in 25 years and caused over $2 billion in damages.

Authorities issued evacuation advisories to some 349,000 residents, while electricity was cut to more than 300,000 houses, according to public broadcaster NHK.

Some 700 people were evacuated to shelters in Okinawa and electricity was cut to almost 200,000 homes, public broadcaster NHK said.

Trami follows on the heels of several large typhoons to hit major Asian population centres this month, including Jebi, which forced the closure of Kansai International Airport.

At least 82 people were injured in 16 prefectures, according to Kyodo News tallies.

Similar measures were taken for some shinkansen bullet train services, with Central Japan Railway Co. stopping all shinkansen trains between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka after 5 p.m. Services between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima as well as many local railway services in western Japan were also halted.

Photo taken on September 29, 2018, shows waves crashing on the coast of Yonabaru, Okinawa Prefecture, as typhoon Trami approaches Japan's southernmost prefecture.

The storm is expected to pass through Honshu island, where Tokyo is situated, between Sunday and Monday and leave the northern island of Hokkaido by Monday midday.

The path of Typhoon Trami is seen on a monitor at Osaka station, in Osaka.

More than 1,000 flights have been cancelled, affecting over 100,000 passengers.

Many flights and trains services were cancelled as the storm moved eastward.

"We are strongly urging our residents to stay indoors because it is extremely unsafe to be outside now", Masaaki Tamaki, an official of Kagoshima's disaster management section, told AFP.

Some western regions are still recovering from the most powerful typhoon to strike the country in a quarter of a century in early September. It claimed 11 lives and shut down Kansai Airport.
