White House Defends Trump for Mocking Blasey Ford

Outpouring of anger on Twitter after Trump mocks Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser

Two senators considered crucial to the confirmation prospects of Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh criticized President Donald Trump on Wednesday for mocking the account of a woman who has accused his Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault decades ago.

Senator Susan Collins of ME, another closely-watched Republican vote, also rebuked Trump for going after Ford, telling reporters on Capitol Hill: "The president's comments were just plain wrong".

But Republican moderates such as Flake, Collins and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska have said their vote will be determined by the outcome of the week-long FBI investigation.

Five days after an extraordinary Senate hearing watched by millions of people in which university professor Christine Blasey Ford detailed her sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh, Trump raised the issue of false accusations against men.

"How did you get there? 'I don't remember, '" Trump said, mocking Ford's voice.

Democrats countered that brief delays in voting on Kavanaugh pale in comparison to Republicans refusing to consider former President Barack Obama's final Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, for most of 2016.

The fact that Trump mocked Ford at a political rally was "not right", Flake told NBC's Today Show.

Senate Majority Mitch McConnell has said the Senate will hold a confirmation vote for Kavanaugh this week.

Under pressure from opposition Democrats and handful of his own Republicans, Trump on Friday ordered a fresh FBI investigation into allegations of Kavanaugh's misconduct during his youth.

"I'm telling all of my colleagues that this is the most despicable thing I've seen since I've been up here", Graham said. "We simply can't", Flake, who is retiring as a senator in January, said at an event in Washington. She is remarkable profile in courage.

"By Ford's own testimony there are gaps in her memory; there are facts that she can not remember", Conway said. She said Trump was merely "pointing out factual inconsistencies". Two other people that Ford alleges were at the party in question, have also denied any knowledge of the party or sexual assault.

"Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well?" he added.

"A man's life is in tatters", he said.

Trump's mockery reflected a growing frustration among some in the White House, and by the president, that her story has not received the same level of scrutiny as Kavanaugh's, said a person close to the process who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Mr Trump said: "My whole life I've heard, "you're innocent until proven guilty", but now you're guilty until proven innocent".

Democrats, meanwhile, demanded that the White House divulge its instructions to the FBI in ordering the investigation, that the FBI's report be made public, and that the bureau's lead investigators brief senators about their their findings.

Once the Senate receives the FBI's report, Republicans are expected to move toward a vote. "In that letter, Dr. Ford asked that her identity remain confidential".

Avenatti said in a tweet Wednesday that the unidentified woman "is prepared to meet with the Federal Bureau of Investigation today and disclose multiple facts and witnesses".

In a Twitter post on Wednesday, Trump did not back away from his comments at the rally, instead attacking Kavanaugh's Democratic critics.

Keyser, a longtime friend of Ford's, was present at the small party where Ford was attacked, according to Ford's testimony before the Judiciary Committee.

Leahy, one of the most senior Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee, says he worries the fight will have a lasting impact on both the Senate and the courts.
