Lion Air jet crashed after key sensor replaced, Boeing issues safety bulletin

The company will advise pilots to follow a specific protocol to handle the issue, Bloomberg said, which was discovered through the investigation into the Lion Air crash.

Boeing said its bulletin, sent to airlines on Tuesday, reiterates guidelines on how pilots should respond to erroneous data from an "angle of attack" sensor following the Oct 29 crash that killed 189 people.

Experts say the Boeing notice could be about the "angle of attack", which is the angle of the wing relative to oncoming air stream, a measure that indicates if a plane is likely to stall. There were no survivors. Police medical experts have received almost 140 body bags of human remains and have identified 14 victims.

While search teams scouring the waters managed to bring up the flight data recorder, a separate recorder that captures cockpit conversations and background noise is still buried in the seabed where the plane plunged.

Data from the plane's flight data recorder, also known as a "black box," showed that the plane experienced issues on several flights prior to the crash, the head of Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT), told reporters.

Mr Tjahjono has said 69 hours of recorded data from 19 flights, including the one that crashed, had been downloaded successfully from a partly damaged flight data recorder recovered on Thursday.

The agency said it would probe what caused the indicator problem and whether proper repairs were done - including replacing the faulty component, he added.

(AAP) Family and friends of the Lion Air victims gathered at he crash site to farewell their loved ones after the October 29 tragedy.

"Currently we are looking for the cause of problem", said investigator Nurcahyo Utomo, Associated Press reported.

Rescuers use a crane to retrieve part of the landing gears of the crashed Lion Air jet from the sea floor in the waters of Tanjung Karawang, Indonesia, Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018. The information can be critical in preventing the plane from stalling.

The US-based aircraft manufacturer plans to warn operators that these jets can abruptly dive because of "erroneous readings from a flight-monitoring system", according to the outlet.

The technical log shows the airliner had reported an "unreliable" airspeed reading on four of the prior flights, investigators said.

It did not give more details and did not speculate on how the indicator problem may have played a role in the crash, as it continues to mine the flight recorder - seen as key to answering why a almost brand new plane fell out of the sky.

Data transmitted from the plane and captured by flightradar24.com indicates that the plane continued flying at high speed away from the airport to which they meant to return, which Cox said seemed unusual.

At a meeting on Monday, to address the grieving families of the victims, Tjahjono said that the plane did not explode mid-air and was intact when it plunged into the sea, with its engine's turbines running at high speed.
