Republicans Win Mississippi Senate Race Despite Media Blitz, Report Says

Supporters of Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde Smith celebrate during an election night party in Jackson Mississippi

Hyde-Smith led former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Espy (D) by 56 percent to 44 percent with 76 percent of precincts reporting.

After Republican State Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith won her bid to represent MS in U.S. Senate in Tuesday's special runoff election, there will be a record 24 women in Senate next year.

Trump himself has also become far more engaged, calling Hyde-Smith last week to express concern about her flailing campaign.

Hyde-Smith won the election on a variety of promises including lower taxes, lighter regulations, protecting the life of unborn babies, and better support for the military, police, and war veterans.

Hyde-Smith's win is historic - she's the first woman to be elected to the Senate from Mississippi. On Monday, Trump staged an intervention and swooped into the state, staging two rallies and one roundtable event, in an attempt to seal the deal for Hyde-Smith, whose candidacy has appeared uncertain in the final weeks of her campaign.

Hyde-Smith's comment on a public hanging is not dissimilar to other gaffes she has made.

The Republicans pumped resources into Mississippi, and United States president Donald Trump made a strong effort on behalf of Ms Hyde-Smith, holding last-minute rallies in Mississippi on Monday.

Hyde-Smith's win gives Republicans a total of 53 Senate seats, slightly strengthening the party's majority. Ultimately, the lack of a more honest apology, and the questions surrounding why Hyde-Smith would make the comment in the first place - especially in light of Mississippi's bleak history of public hangings of black Americans - is deeply troubling.

Hyde-Smith's campaign team defended those comments too, with spokesperson Melissa Scallan telling The Washington Post that the comment was simply " a joke". Espy would have been the first African-American elected from the state since Reconstruction.

"I thought Mike Espy ran a very good campaign", said supporter Machelle Kyles of Bolton.

Donald Trump rallied with Cindy Hyde-Smith on election eve.

Those remarks set off a national maelstrom, with Democrats seeing them as a reference to lynching in a state that had the highest number of lynchings in the Jim Crow era. Hyde-Smith's daughter later attended a similar private school established around the same time, according to the Free Press.

In 2014, Hyde-Smith posted a picture on Facebook of herself wearing a replica of a Confederate army hat.

U.S. President Donald Trump had said at the Biloxi campaign rally on November 26 that illegal immigrants, such as those participating in the caravans between Mexico and the United States, are unfairly disadvantaging American workers.

"That comment hurt her", Hayes Dent, Republican strategist and former U.S. House hopeful, told us. However, in 2018, it is deeply troubling to hear the term "public hanging" being used in this context by a senator, particularly given the division in our politics. Hyde-Smith captioned the photos, "Mississippi history at its best!"

As it stands now, major American corporations and brands including Walmart, Major League Baseball, Google and AT&T have all demanded that Hyde-Smith return their donations to her campaign. She accused Espy of twisting her words for political gain. "We still do have a very divided state".
