Trump Ex-Lawyer Pleads Guilty To Misleading Congress In Russia Probe

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former lawyer, has pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about work he did on a Trump real estate deal in Russian Federation.

According to ABC News, Mueller, now investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, reportedly submitted the questions to the president in writing. "And that was for there to be accountability and transparency with regards to whether or not the Russians interfered with the 2016 election", Zeldin said.

Cohen admitted misleading lawmakers on talks during the presidential race about a Trump property deal in Moscow.

Cohen also said Thursday that he also lied about never discussing travel to Russian Federation with Trump.

He has previously identified "individual 1" as Mr Trump.

Michael Cohen may be charged with fraud over US$20 million in loans.

He noted that Cohen's crimes - like many of Mueller's indictments - are seemingly "unrelated to the Trump campaign". Trump Organisation spokeswoman Amanda Miller and chief legal officer Alan Garten didn't immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

The President, who last week submitted written answers to questions posed in the Mueller investigation, called the project a "deal that didn't happen", mostly because he was busy running for president, but defended its propriety.

Outside the courthouse on Thursday (Friday NZT), Guy Petrillo, a lawyer for Cohen said, "Mr Cohen has cooperated".

Cohen made a surprise court appearance Thursday in NY. Already, according to ABC News, he has provided more than 70 hours of testimony to Mueller's team.

Ahead of a second trial, Manafort struck a plea deal with Mueller's team in September in which 10 charges from his first trial were dismissed, thereby avoiding a second trial on foreign-lobbying and money-laundering charges.

The document goes on to say Cohen made those statements attempting to hide or minimise a number of facts, including that the project "was discussed multiple times within the company and did not end in January 2016", but rather Cohen and "Individual 2" discussed the efforts as late as June 2016.

Cohen pleaded guilty on Thursday to lying to Congress about the project, putting fresh pressure on the president.

Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee, also on the Judiciary Committee, told Newsweek she had similar feelings about investigating a Trump pardon of Manafort. Trump has issued repeated denials.

"Individual 1" is, as the document points out, who Cohen worked for at a Manhattan-based real estate company.

Cohen pleaded guilty to making false statements to both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees.

Cohen worked on the deal with Felix Sater, a Russian-born developer and U.S. citizen, who served as a deal broker on the project.

"We had looked at it earlier than that, but it sort of faded away I believe at the end of '14", he replied. Trump ultimately didn't make the trip.

Trump has increasingly been lashing out at the Mueller investigation, calling it an "illegal Joseph McCarthy style Witch Hunt" that has "shattered so many innocent lives".

Trump lambasted Cohen following the plea deal.

Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday that Cohen is lying. According to the new charges, Cohen and individuals within Trump's company were still trying to get the Russian government's approval for a hotel as late as June 2016, and Cohen had in fact been briefing Trump and members of Trump's family about the efforts.
