Trump stands by Saudis, even though prince may have known about killing

The Latest: Trump says no new punishment for writer’s murder

Crown Prince Mohammed plans to attend a G20 summit in Argentina at the end of the month despite the global outcry caused by Mr Khashoggi's death.

A USA official told The Associated Press that intelligence officials have concluded that bin Salman ordered the killing.

Among the evidence cited in the report, the official said, is the relationship between members of the kill team and the crown prince, and the hierarchy of the Saudi system.

Turkey's defence minister Hulusi Akar has repeated claims that Turkey did not obtain the recordings of Jamal Khashoggi's murder by bugging the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. One of the individuals was identified by Haberturk as Maher Abdulaziz Mutreb, who investigators believe is the leader of the 15-man group sent to kill the Saudi dissident. It would be a wonderful gift to them directly from the United States!

Trump said the king and crown prince of Saudi Arabia "vigorously deny" any knowledge of the planning and execution of the October 2 murder of The Washington Post columnist at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Trump said, referring to Mohammed bin Salman.

"We ensure that this country will never deviate from implementing God's law without discrimination", he added, without directly addressing the murder of The Washington Post columnist in his speech.

President Donald Trump said Prince Mohammed has denied to him perhaps five times that he had a role in Khashoggi's murder - and that the US government may never know.

The US earlier sanctioned 17 Saudi officials suspected of being responsible for or complicit in the killing, but members of Congress have called for harsher actions.

"Saudi Arabia, I get along with all of them", said Donald Trump as a candidate for office in 2015.

The United States, he said, "intends to remain a steadfast partner of Saudi Arabia". "America First!" he wrote.

Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney, a Democrat from NY, tweeted that "President Trump's refusal to accept the CIA's assessment that MBS not only knew about but ORDERED the assassination of #Khashoggi is a betrayal of the American intelligence community and yet another clear indicator of his disdain for freedom of the press".

Kinzinger said that those urging Trump to realign the United States' relationship with Saudi Arabia aren't "thinking strategically on foreign policy to say the least".

"They're going to try to do it because they want to embarrass the president", he said.

However, in response to a parliamentary query, the government said previous accords meant no Eurofighter partner nation could block a sale of jets or parts to other countries.
