China summons Canada envoy over detained Huawei exec: state media

Chinese telecom giant Huawei's chief financial officer, arrested in Canada, faces USA fraud charges for allegedly lying to banks about the use of a covert subsidiary to sell to Iran in breach of sanctions, a bail hearing heard Friday.

The US alleges Meng covered up her company's links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions.

"Skycom employees, it's alleged, were Huawei employees", Gibb-Carsley said.

David Ryder / Reuters A member of B.C. Sheriff Service (BCSS) and a security guard keep watch outside the B.C. Supreme Court bail hearing of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, who is held on an extradition warrant in Vancouver.

The executive is the daughter of Huawei's founder.

"To feel the pull of bail, we are in a different universe in this case", he added. It also says that Meng and Huawei misled American banks about its business dealings in Iran. The attorney didn't name the banks.

Meng, 46, was taken into custody on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018, on behalf of the US, while she was transferring flights in Vancouver, the tech company said. The detention was part of an American investigation into an alleged scheme to use the global banking system to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran.

According to court documents, the U.S. learned of Meng's plans to stop over in Vancouver on route to a third country on November 29.

"The Chinese government should seriously mull over the U.S. tendency to abuse legal procedures to suppress China's high-tech enterprises", said the nationalist tabloid Global Times in an editorial. "HSBC has rich experience in trade compliance", he added.

Larry Kudlow, director of the White House's National Economic Council, told CNBC he did not believe Meng's arrest would "spill over" into the talks with China aimed at increasing Beijing's purchases of USA farm and energy commodities, lowering Chinese tariffs and making sweeping changes to China's policies on intellectual property and technology transfers. The court heard she was en route from Hong Kong to Mexico.

The case has roiled markets already hammered by months of rising trade tension between the world's two largest economies.

On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang slammed Washington over Meng's detention, calling the move a "violation of human rights", and stressing that Ottawa and Washington had failed to provide a cogent explanation about the reasons for her detention. Meng is one of China's most prominent businesswomen.

Two state-run media outlets in China have come out with blistering attacks on the U.S. related to the arrest in recent days of Huawei's CFO Meng Wanzhou, who faces extradition here, saying the arrest is just a backdoor way for the USA to try to hobble the company.

"This is one of the U.S.'s many tactics and tools used in its trade war with China to maximize its gains". She conferred with her two lawyers through a translator. About 100 people looked on from the public gallery.

Canada has a long-standing extradition treaty with the United States, requiring it to cooperate with US Department of Justice requests to hand over suspects.

The United States has 60 days to make a formal extradition request, which a Canadian judge will weigh to determine whether the case against Meng is strong enough. Until then, she will remain in custody.
