Jeremy Corbyn agrees to debate Theresa May on BBC - on one condition

May denies being too 'feart' to debate Sturgeon over Brexit

I think we should remember that we gave the vote to the British people as to whether or not to leave the EU.

She added: "The focus of myself and the Government is on the vote taking place on December 11".

It is understood that Corbyn, who had previously resisted the idea of a second public vote, did not oppose the strategy, though he stressed the need to focus on defeating May in the forthcoming "meaningful vote".

Ex-Universities and Science Minister Sam Gyimah likened the deal to playing soccer against opponents who "are the referee and they make the rules as well".

Many members of Parliament on both sides of the Brexit debate oppose the deal - Brexiters because it keeps Britain bound closely to the European Union, pro-EU politicians because it erects barriers between the United Kingdom and the European Union, its biggest trading partner.

The Prime Minister proposed the debate during an interview with the Sun, in a bid to gain support for her Brexit deal.

"The EU said there was nothing else available, but what you see in the [Brexit deal] is.a more ambitious free trade agreement than Canada, that ends free movement which Norway doesn't do".

May has said if lawmakers in parliament's House of Commons reject the agreement it could see the world's fifth-largest economy leaving the bloc without a deal, or not leaving at all.

One shadow cabinet source said: "So we have to have a policy for when the no-confidence vote fails - a clear line".

Brexiteers have accused the government of betraying the 2016 referendum, as the deal could see the United Kingdom locked in the EU customs union long after the article 50 deadline.

Dismissing suggestions that she should face Boris Johnson or Nicola Sturgeon as well as Jeremy Corbyn in the TV showdown, Mrs May said: "This is not a debate about recreating the referendum debate of Leavers versus Remainers".

The main opposition Labour Party and a cross-party group of senior lawmakers have put forward amendments to block May's European Union withdrawal deal and to rule out a no-deal Brexit. This, it says, is "the only guaranteed opportunity - written in statute - for the Commons to back a people's vote".

In his speech he is also due to make an appeal for unity and a healing of political divisions over the referendum result, adding: "In politics we can not always have the luxury of doing what we want for ourselves, but we have an abiding duty to do what is right for our country".

Scotland for a People's Vote campaign leader John Edward also welcomed the announcement.

May visited Scotland on Wednesday in attempt to drum up public support for her Brexit deal agreed in Brussels last weekend, which she says suits all corners of Britain. A survey of Tory members by ConservativeHome found 72% of Tory members are against it while only 25% back it.

Speaking at the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires, Abe urged May "to avoid no deal, as well as to ensure transparency, predictability as well as legal stability in the Brexit process".

She added: "The view I have had from farmers, employers and sector organisations and others in my trips around the country is that they recognise the importance of this deal and they support this deal".
