In an arguably historic milestone Apple’s application store downloads have gate-crashed through the 3bn mark. The applications which are available across 20 categories for iPhone and iPod users worldwide achieved this milestone in 18 months. Sounding euphoric on the development Apple CEO said, “Three billion applications downloaded in less than 18 months—this is like nothing we’ve ever seen before… The revolutionary App Store offers iPhone and iPod touch users an experience unlike anything else available on other mobile devices, and we see no signs of the competition catching up anytime soon.”
Apple’s App stores, which was launched in June 2008, targets iPhone and iPod users with a wide array of downloadable applications across categories like games, business, travel, news, sports, health et.al. The app store caters to the needs of users across 77 countries. The app store operates in a highly competitive landscape, which has presence of players like Nokia, Google, Blackberry et al. The store is already seeing a gargantuan 10mn downloads each day. And there seems to be no stopping for Apple. The company is already planning to rollout credit card payment application, which would help its iPhone users to transact through their handheld device, soon through its app store.
Spearheaded by the two uber-hit products – iPhone and iPod the app store seems to be raking in good business for the tech giant.
