The Blu-ray Disc Association announced today that it has finalized the 3-D Disc Specification, which includes support for the PlayStation 3. The format will be display agnostic, supporting any 3-D television, including LCD and Plasma models.
3D playback will be “display agnostic,” meaning that, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the format will be compatible across “any compatible 3D display.” What exactly a “compatible 3D display” consists of is still a mystery, but a Blu-ray Disc Association representative said via a phone call that for the most part, you’ll need a new TV set to make this technology work.
“From a technological perspective, it is simply the best available platform for bringing 3D into the home,” said Benn Carr, chairman, BDA 3D Task Force. “The disc capacity and bit rates Blu-ray Disc provides enable us to deliver 3D in Full HD 1080p high definition resolution.”
Upcoming 3-D Blu-ray discs will require a 3-D-capable HDTV, a pair of IR-enabled 3-D glasses, and a Blu-ray player that supports 3-D.
This announcement bodes well for Sony as the head of PlayStation marketing, John Koller, recently stated that 3D gaming will be one of Sony’s “three pillars” of their 2010 strategy. The Blu-ray disc is the PS3’s game disc medium.
