A day without computer

The unions CGT, SUD-Rail, CFDT and Unsa called the station computer of some 2,000 public company to stop work on 1 April to demand guarantees on “employment in France” and “network control” as part of a future partnership with IBM.

The four unions called next Thursday “a day without computer” at the station and does not provide implications for the general public either at the movement of trains or Ticket.

SNCF announced in mid-January that it would join forces with IBM to create a subsidiary (Stelsia), in which it would have 51% share and will be responsible for services to the railway company. The contract covers a period of six years and amounted to 1.7 billion euros.

The unions are against this project because they believe that the station will lose control of their computers and become dependent on IBM and they also fear the relocation of jobs from its information providers. The station employs have 2100 tations in its services and about 2,000 people over a dozen providers.
