A $139 Wi-Fi only kindle was launched by Amazon which is expected to drive digital book sales.
On Thursday, Amazon also introduced a $189 third generation model of the original Kindle with Wi-Fi and 3G wireless technology. It enables the users to not buy digital books from Amazon but also allows them to download them in even less than a minute.
Amazon is offering for both the kindles about $10 less than comparable e-readers from rivals Barnes & Noble, Borders and about $30 less than Sony’s device.
The latest kindles despite the low prices is providing several improvements over the previous generation.
The size of the screen is six inches as before but the display is based upon E Ink’s new technology which delivers a 50% greater contrast ratio. It offers many advantages over the LCD displays used in Apple’s IPad and Smartphone’s, one of them being that despite the black and white display it enables the users to read text even in direct sunlight due to its high resolution.
The latest model has a better battery life of about 1 month and twice the storage .It can store upto 3’500 digital books. Also the kindle is made 21% smaller which makes it sleek and reduces its weight by 15% to 8.7 ounces.
Amazon has poised the shipments on Wednesday. It has taken pre-orders but it will reach retailers until August 27.Yet the company is trying to make it in time for the back-to-school shopping season.
With this new releases the competitors are being pressurized to provide devices in prices as low as under $100.With this the industry shift is expected toward making money on the sales of e-books instead of the e-readers, as the devices are meant to reach the potential book buyers.
