The 3D sci-fi blockbuster, Avatar, has made a Titanic level of earning by becoming the fastest $1 billion making movie in the history. Directed by James Cameron of the Titanic fame, the alien based movie has been able to make a mark across the world.
As per 20th Century Fox, within 17 days the film has made $350 million in the US alone and has mopped up another $670 million in rest of the world. According to Box Office Guru, the movie was able to make an earning of $250 million in first 12 days, fifth fastest for records. The film also holds the record of touching $77 million in its first weekend opening.
The film, based on a storyline of how a handicapped US marine goes to a distant planet in his alien form and helps the local inhabitants, is the most expensive film made till date. Owing to its different and spectacular graphics, the film seems to be going ahead on the path to become the most successful.
Gaining momentum from the word-of-mouth publicity followed by the Christmas Holiday’s, the film has made its mark by going ahead of movies like ‘The Dark Knight’ and even Cameron’s Titanic.
Titanic, which was released in 1997, is ‘highest grosser’ ever with sales crossing $1.84 billion. So far only four films have managed to cross the $1 billion mark and Avatar is the fifth in the list.
According to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office, Cameron’s visually delightful movie was able to earn $68.3 million over New Year’s weekend. This is the biggest third week earning done by any movie.
Other movies, which have also made good openings during this New Year, are Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. The movies have made $38.4 million and $36.6 million respectively.
