BarMax California Edition, available now in the iPhone’s App Store for $999.99, is a study guide for the California Bar Exam.
The application is just over 1 gigabyte, making it one of the largest iPhone applications so far. The price is justified is because the company that is synonymous with this type of test prep, BarBri, typically offers it for $3,000 to $4,000. BarMax CA believes it can get away with the lower price because it’s just an app, there is no in-class element.
Several Harvard lawyers worked together to create this application to prepare students for passing the California Bar Exam. The app includes everything from calendar, questions and answers from actual tests, and lectures.
Mike Ghaffary came up with the idea for the iPhone app while studying for the bar exam. He figured there must be a less expensive way to get all the bar prep items you needed, so he gathered some iPhone app developers and Harvard Law grads to help him create BarMax.
BarMax is currently available for the California bar exam preparation, Ghaffary and his team hope to release subsequent apps for the bar exams in New York and five other most popular states for the exam, by the end of 2010.
