Cheers to consumers as Sony brings down e-reader prices

Apple’s entry into the e-reader section has seen other companies rethinking their marketing strategies. As the competition has toughened after the iPad has made its way into the section with its April debut the other companies manufacturing e-reader have been left to consider many factors about their devices like the price to stay against the electronic major.  Sony corp. has done it again; it’s the second time since the debut of iPad that the company has cut the price of its e-reader in the US.

Sony spokesman Sean Yoneda has elaborated via phone that the electronics maker has reduced the price of Reader Daily Edition e-reader to $299 from $349 earlier this month and has also made smaller reductions on two other models. This price cut comes after the prices were reduced just two months back in May. Sony has merely followed the trend that has been going the rounds with all other companies producing the e-reader. The company is following similar moves by rivals Amazon.com making the e-reader kindle  and Barnes & Noble that too stand a threat with the Apple’s entry into the arena.

Besides the reader daily edition the price cuts of other models are now priced at- Sony Reader Pocket Edition now for $149 and the Touch Edition for $169. The Pocket Edition had earlier retailed for $169 and the Touch Edition for $199. As such we can say that the amount of cuts represents a series of price-drops ranging from $20 to $50.

The section has started witnessing the action from June 21, when Barnes & Noble announced a price reduction for its Nook e-reader from $259 to $199, along with a WiFi-only version of its device for $149. This prompted other companies in this section to take swift action too and that same afternoon, Amazon announced that the price of its original Kindle would be reset from $259 to $199.

The war has also been taken into the features that each device boasts of. The companies are busy providing regular updates and are trying to overrun each other in being the best and technologically most advanced reader in the market.

The price cut will surely benefit the consumers that will also see the positive side of the growing competition in the form of better feature and facilities being provided to them. And in the end it will see only the survival of the best e-reader at the best prices in the markets.
