ComScore confirms Facebook is No. 1 in India

The popular social networking site, Facebook is in the top position in India, confirms the research firm, ComScore.  ComScore reports that in July the number of visitors on the social network was 20.9 million.  Facebook has come up beating Orkut and Yahoo.  Orkut retained its top position in India among the social networking site but the on going popularity of Facebook has forced Orkut to leave the top position.

In the social networking category, Facebook has won laurels for itself and has taken hold of as the number one position.  More than 33 million Internet users (aged 15 and older) in India visited social networking sites in July, according to the report.

India and Brazil were dominated by Orkut.  July this year saw the change and people switched their account from Orkut to Facebook.  Orkut in comparison to Facebook took the backseat with around 19.9 million visitors in July.
Facebook has also set up a local office in India.  India is now the seventh largest market worldwide for social networking, after the US, China, Germany, Russia, Brazil and the UK.

ComScore Executive Vice President (Asia-Pacific) Will Hodgman said, “The social networking phenomenon continues to gain steam worldwide, and India represents one of the fastest growing markets at the moment.”
