The most popular social networking seems to be in grips of some economical problems. The lack of profits is the reason behind the decision of the site against the existence of the gift shop despite its popularity.
The shop allowed or rather allowed the Facebook users to spend $1 or more on things like a digital birthday cake or a balloon on occasions or otherwise and gift it to their near and dear ones.
Coming August 1 will see the last of the gift shop. Breaking the news to the world was the Facebook’s official blog where product manager Jared Morgenstern wrote “Closing the Gift Shop may disappoint many of the people who have given millions of gifts, but we made the decision after careful thought about where we need to focus our product development efforts,”. The service has enabled Facebook users to express their feelings through the virtual gifts since 2007 when the shop was born with the efforts of the Facebook staffers.
Thy gift shop had to make way its popularity had dwindled in the wake of the users ever wanting more and more out of their Facebook experience. It was fast loosing out to the other Facebook applications like Pieces of Flair and Birthday Calendar that let users hand out similar digital goodies. The company focuses now on improving other products and services that it is offering.
The users need not worry about the gifts they have received in the past because even though the shop will be closed but still the gifts that they have received in the past will still be visible on their wall. And the page displaying all their sent and received gifts too will not be lost.
People have shown mixed reactions to the site’s decisions. Some have simply accepted it while others are actually sad at its end. As posted by one of the user at the closing down of the Facebook’s own and one of the initial initiatives “I am actually upset by this. i hate third-party apps for it because they are full of spam and stuff you do not want. I fail to see why this has to actually disappear. It’s working fine right now as it is.”
The end bitter or sweet is inevitable.
