For the first time in the US, the popular social networking site Facebook has surpassed the most popular seach engine Google. It was for the first time Facebook has transcended in peak traffic for such long a period of time.
For the entire week people caught up more on the interaction with pals on Facebook than on Google, however the margin between the two was very thin.According to Experian Hitwise, a company that measures online traffic, published by the Financial Times, for the week ending March 13, visits to Facebook.com accounted for 7.07 percent of all Internet traffic in the United States leading ahead of google that followed it with 7.03 percent.
It must be added here that the sharp division of the services and the pages on which the calculation is based may give rise to some doubts among the people. It is so because the difference is calculated only on their home page, Google.com and Facebook.com, and then only for the traffic in the U.S.. Moreover, Google’s success depends on people going on the Internet and circulates freely doing research on the contrary, Facebook is a closed circuit, for its users the web is only a means to stay connected within the community.
But if we talk in terms of revenue then FB has a turnover of not more than 1.5 billion dollars a year and it needs to go a very long way to rival Google’s 24 billion dollars per annum.
While Google dominates the market of online, with the services and especially advertising, Facebook has just started to make a profit on its operations, and has a very bright and promising future ahead.
In the mean time, Facebook declined to comment on the Hitwise report. Although its said that it added about 100 million users between September and February, to reach to a total of more than 400 million active users.
We can surely see that Facebook is on its way to become the top site in the near future. On a monthly basis Google is still number one in front of Facebook which earns the fifth position in the world rankings.
Will Google have to get used to only be the number two? Lets wait to find the answer after Facebook has confronted its leadership unchallenged for years.
