FBI waiting to hear back from Gawker Media and Goatse Security

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday that they want to investigate the case of the iPad data leaks at the largest U.S. mobile operators, AT & T. It would examine whether the leak constituted a “potential threat” to security, they said.

A hacker group had used an open interface in the mobile network to automate the e-mail addresses from around 114,000 users of the UMTS version of Apple’s Tablet computer read out. This list submitted to the U.S. online publisher Gawker Media, which published excerpts from it.

The leak includes names of senior U.S. officials and politicians, some from the Department of Homeland Security and the White House. Apple has not commented on the case. AT & T has assumed full responsibility for the data leak.

Today FBI has contacted Gawker Media and issued a formal preservation notice. EBI also inquired from the security group that first discovered the vulnerability, and FBI demanded for a statement from Goatse Security.

FBI is waiting for the answers of both for further investigations.
