Google Nexus One inches closer to the end of its life

As announced on Friday Google has received the final batch of Nexus one phones for its online store. This will be the last set of phones that the search giant will put to sale on its site. Through the blog post Google announced that the web store will soon shut down that sold the phone directly to the people. The sales of the phone weren’t too good according to reports, after more than five months, it had sold a mere 500,000 devices. Thus plans for additional carriers to join T-Mobile in offering Nexus One via the Google web store were shelved had to be shelved too.

In a statement issued Google said “Once we sell these devices, the Nexus One will no longer be available online from Google,” in Google’s views its Nexus One experiment was a clear success. Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt added that he viewed that even though the phone was criticized it did work.

Earlier this may the company had announced that the lack of interest among people for the once popular phone has the company decided to not sell the phone on its site anymore and instead the phone will be available on the brick-and-mortar stores. The stores are of partners of the company including Vodafone stores in Europe, KT stores in Korea and I wireless in Midwestern U.S. More names and locations will be added to these lists based on local demands for the phone.

The Nexus one came to the markets in January this year at $179.99 on T-mobile or at $529.99 unlocked and Users could purchase the device online at google.com.

For the developers to get their hands on the latest Android OS on the Nexus One phone they will have to sign into the Android Market Publisher Site to buy it. These will be sold through a partner. Google has this decided as it wanted to ensure developers have access to the phone with the latest Android OS.

Exactly as per the expectations, the Android enthusiast community saw mixed reactions to the abrupt end of Google’s flagship smartphone. Some were lamenting the decision while others welcomed it as a wise one. However those who have already purchased the phone will continue to get Google’s support.
