IT job salaries rise first quarter in WA

More than 40% of IT jobs in Perth have received a salary or contract rate rise in the first quarter of this year helped by the rebound in the WA resources sector, a survey has found. The IT employment agency showed NSW, Victoria and WA enjoyed strong and steady growth in demand over the January-March quarter.

In Western Australia CIO level executives have seen wages rise to $240,000 from only $200,000 in November last year, with wages in NSW and Victoria significantly higher, however static in trend terms at $350,000 in Sydney or $300,000 in Melbourne.

Peoplebank acting chief executive Jeff Knowles said there had been an increase in the number of roles available as businesses continued to invest in new IT capabilities. “We expect increased demand right across the country in the coming months,” he said.

The increase for skills seen during the first quarter of the year in WA, would likely be mirrored in the Eastern states this quarter. Key skills currently in demand are contract workers with expertise in banking projects, business analysis, project management and Web 2.

Jeff Knowles, acting CEO of Peoplebank has said that despite the increase in wages for IT professionals in Western Australia, it is unlikely that Perth will unseat Sydney and Melbourne wage levels with large concentrations of IT Giants located in the latter.
