In a bid to avoid Apple and Google eating into its market share, Microsoft introduced its latest version of its ‘Windows phone operating system’, adding video-games and music features. Microsoft wants to change things around with the inclusion of the phone features in its operating system.
The company wants to stem its losses in smartphone category and wishes to give customers a whole new meaning to the smartphone category. “…But the smartphones today of all kind look the same…. People will say Windows phone 7 Series is different, the way we integrated Bing, Office, Xbox and Zune,” said Steve Ballmer.
Share of Microsoft’s Windows dropped to a 7.9 per cent in the world smartphone software market in the fourth quarter, while that of Apple’s IPhone and Google’s Android have gained. This is despite Microsoft Windows being used by handset makers such as HTC Corp, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson.
Microsoft said device makers and network operators have already started working on the new software, and they expect the first device to be available in the second half of 2010.
