Sony Ericsson unveils New Smartphones in Barcelona

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Sunday night the world’s fourth-largest phone maker Sony Ericsson unveiled three smartphone models, using Google’s Android operating system in two of them, and Nokia’s Symbian in one.

The company, a joint venture between Sweden’s L.M. Ericsson Telephone Co. and Japan’s Sony Corp., said it will in the second quarter launch the new smartphones Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro. These are compact versions of the Xperia X10 flagship phone which was announced late 2009 and will be launched during the first quarter 2010, it said.

The Xperia X10 mini is equipped with 2GB of storage, upgradeable to 16GB using a microSD card, a 600MHz Qualcomm 7227 processor, WiFi, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a battery good for up to 3.5 hours of talk time. It has a fairly small 2.5-inch 320 x 240 touch screen.

They run Android 1.6 on a 600MHz Qualcomm MSM7227 and will ship in both North American and global 3G variants. Some other features include quad-band EDGE, WiFi, Bluetooth.

Sony Ericsson also Sunday announced a new online user platform called Creations, to let users create and publish video, audio and images from their mobile phones. Sony Ericsson is engaging with application developers to create content tools and applications for the platform, it added.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro has a QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen, which allows users to produce and broadcast HD video. The phone comes connected to the PlayNow app store and will be available in select markets in the second-half of the year.
