Attacks against oil tankers in the Strait of Malacca are being planned by an unidentified terrorist group, it is warned on Thursday by the Singapore Navy, quoted by an association of owners of Singapore.
The Shipowners Association of Singapore (SSA) said it received Thursday from the RSN a message that “a terrorist group is preparing attacks against oil tankers in the Strait of Malacca.
The Navy did not rule out “possible attacks against other ships carrying dangerous goods.The goal of terrorists is likely to talk about themselves and show what their group is able to do ,” said Marine.
The army reminded owners that the attackers could use small boats such as dinghies and speedboats to carry out their attacks.
Fishing boats were used in the past in the Strait of Malacca by hackers to conduct their attacks.
The Navy recommends vessels “strengthen border security and vigilance.”
Over 30% of world trade and half of oil shipments transiting through the Straits of Malacca, which jointly control Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
In 2001, the Singapore authorities had foiled a terrorist plot to hijack an airliner in Bangkok and have it crash into Changi Airport in Singapore.
Police in the city-state has also arrested several men suspected of planning a bomb attack against the embassy including the United States.
