Updated Map Viewing @ BING

Microsoft has updated its Bing Maps service to offer new features like Overlays (an alternative to Google Maps’ Street View), enhanced Bird’s Eye feature, and new Applications Gallery where users can customize their maps, add local information and check local businesses with the help of this new service.

Bing now offers some features that you’d not find on Google Maps. Features such as Lightspeed, where passing scenery blurs to the user feel of physical presence, and Photosynth technology, which helps users browse 3D images.

However, these additional services come with a catch. For example, to be able to use Streetside feature, users will be required to install Silverlight on their systems. The zoom levels on Google Maps are far better. Also, Bing isn’t as comprehensive as Google Maps. While Bing Maps may be a good alternative to Google Maps, it will still take some convincing for a user to switch from Google Maps.
