Vodafone becames operator of Apple’s iPhone

Vodafone has started to sell the Apple’s iPhone after O2, Orange and Tesco and said it had already taken pre-orders on 50,000 devices. The iPhone was originally exclusive to O2, but that has now changed with other service providers now getting their hands on the popular mobile phone.

The CEO of Vodafone confirmed in a statement that the mobile network operator would be delivering “over 50,000 iPhones to customers on its first day of selling the device”, far more also than the 30,000 iPhones Orange sold last November.

“It’s an outstanding phone and our network has been built for smartphones. We already carry vast volumes of data, so we’ve got the capacity to handle the iPhone demand,” a spokesman for Vodafone said.

The company said this week that one customer activated their Tesco Mobile handset every two seconds on Christmas Day, while the arrival of the iPhone has “generated strong customer demand”.

The iPhone 3GS 16GB is free on a £45 per month two year deal. 1GB of mobile Internet access is included on all contracts.

Despite some high profile contenders for the most desired handset – including the HTC built Google phone, the Nexus One – Apple’s iPhone has consistently drawn the crowds.
