AG Ferguson seeks halt to Trump's immigration Executive Order

The attorney generals of 15 states and the District of Columbia have condemned President Trump's executive order that bars nationals of seven countries from entering the United States for three months, temporarily bans refugees from entering the country and indefinitely suspends the Syrian refugee program.

"In addition to its suit regarding the order's constitutionality, Washington's Attorney General is also seeking a temporary restraining order to" immediately halt" what it believes to be the unlawful action ordered by Trump.

Federal judges in three states followed a USA judge in NY in barring authorities from deporting travelers affected by Trump's executive order.

The order suspended all immigration for citizens of the seven countries for 90 days.

"Importantly, however, lawful permanent residents of the United States traveling on a valid I-551 will be allowed to board USA bound aircraft and will be assessed for exceptions at arrival ports of entry, as appropriate", it said in a statement. Ferguson's lawsuit is broader in scope and seeks to invalidate entire sections of the Executive Order nationwide.

Attorney General Bob Ferguson said his team has worked all weekend to prepare a lawsuit that will be filed Monday afternoon in federal court.

The attorney generals' pledge to fight the order came on a tumultuous day marked by protests at the White Hours and major US airports; furious civil rights, immigration advocates, church groups and Democrats in Congress vowing to fight the Trump order; and world leaders condemning it.

Ferguson and members of his staff were joined by Gov. Jay Inslee, who applauded peaceful demonstrations against the order and statements of opposition from religious leaders of many faiths.

Trump, a businessman who successfully tapped into American fears about terror attacks during his campaign, had promised what he called "extreme vetting" of immigrants and refugees from areas the White House said the U.S. Congress deemed to be high risk. "I won't", said Ferguson at a news conference.

"Its impact, its cruelty, its clear objective is an unconscionable religious test, and its effect in America is that it's unconstitutional", he said.

Ferguson said he has been in contact with other attorneys general but at this point Washington state was acting on its own regarding the legal action. One is a citizen of Sudan and the other a citizen of Yemen, both countries named in Trump's order.

A federal judge in NY on Saturday night granted an emergency stay temporarily halting the removal of people who, though with previously approved refugee applications or with valid visas, had been detained following Trump's order.

In Washington state, large number of refugees are from Afghanistan, Somalia, Iraq, Ukraine and Burma (Myanmar), according to OneAmerica, which said families from those countries are often fleeing oppression and violence.
