Trump has 'full confidence' in embattled aide: adviser

McCain, a leading Republican voice on foreign relations, said Flynn's resignation raised questions about the administration's intentions toward Putin's Russian Federation.

He stood down over allegations he discussed USA sanctions with a Russian envoy before Mr Trump took office. Indeed, Russia did not retaliate for the sanctions and Trump praised President Vladimir Putin, calling him smart. But the White House since has confirmed that Trump knew for "a few weeks" that Flynn discussed sanctions with Russian Federation.

As for his inner circle, Mr Trump is expected to soon name a new national security adviser following this week's ouster of Michael Flynn, who the White House said had misled Vice-President Mike Pence about Mr Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

Flynn's resignation comes as a result of his conversation with Sergey Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the USA, regarding former President Barack Obama's sanctions against Russia in response to the Kremlin's attempt to tamper with the 2016 presidential election.

He further expressed hope that Trump administration will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in United States history. He's speaking to the vice president relative to the conversation the vice president had with Gen. Flynn, and also speaking to various other people about what he considers the single most important subject there is: "our national security". It was strictly coincidental that they had a conversation.

Mr Trump had initially concluded that Mr Flynn's actions did not violate any law, according to Mr Spicer.

"The tone is such hatred", Mr. Trump said of the coverage of his government.

Trump, Feb. 15: General Flynn is a wonderful man.

He added: "There is nobody I have more respect for, well maybe a little bit, than reporters, good reporters".

"The one-president-at-a-time policy I think has served the country well", Graham said.

The characterization of the media's handling of the Flynn saga as "fake" is, well, fake.

In its February 9 story, the Post reported that Flynn, in an interview on February 8, initially denied that he spoke with Kislyak about the US sanctions.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he wants to know if Flynn initiated the conversations with Kislyak or if he was directed to make contact with the ambassador.

Flynn's resignation letter did not mention that he spoke with Kislyak about sanctions.

On Monday afternoon, a key Trump aide, Kellyanne Conway told a TV news anchor the president had full confidence in his national security adviser. Asked to confirm that "the sanctions that Flynn was discussing were the sanctions for the election hacking", Spicer replied, "Right".

Amid reports of widespread leaks within his administration, Mr Trump also warned that he would clamp down on the dissemination of sensitive information, saying he had asked the Justice Department to look into the leaks. Flynn urged Russian Federation not to overreact to the sanctions, indicating the measures could be revisited after Trump was sworn in.

When exactly did Trump know? But we now know that he knew about it for weeks. What report is that?

"Information is being illegally given to the failing New York Times and the Washington Post by the intelligence community (NSA and Federal Bureau of Investigation?)".

The president himself seemed to be under the impression that the intel community were undermining him with leaks, some of which have contained information about his phone calls with foreign leaders.

The president's remarks came after The New York Times reported this week that members of Trump's campaign had multiple contacts with Russian officials during the 2016 presidential campaign.

"The president is evaluating the situation", Spicer's statement said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian Federation would not be commenting on the resignation.

Now, Trump may or may not have read the Post story.

"I would hope ultimately they would be released", he told reporters. Separately, investigations by the FBI into Russia's interference in the election needs to be seen to be scrupulously independent-which means that Mr Trump's attorney-general, Jeff Sessions, should step aside from them.
