Will US abandon New START Treaty?

Sadly, Trump literally had to pause the conversation to ask his aides what New Start is.

Trump mentioned the treaty, which he called the "start-up", in all three debates with Democrat Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign. The group of senators also urged Trump to maintain current US sanctions against Russian Federation.

Beyond that, treaties like New START are the principal reason why Russian Federation has merely active and reserve 1,800 warheads - rather than the 45,000 warheads the country had at its peak in 1986.

The seemingly endless leak of details from within the Trump White House continues.

In an hour-long phone call with Vladimir Putin, President Donald Trump reportedly condemned an Obama-era nuclear arms treaty between the US and Russian Federation, calling it a "bad deal" for America.

"I have communicated things back into the new administration on this very issue that I would strongly, strongly urge them to think about a much more strategic response to Putin on the cyberattack front", Shedd said.

That's standard operating procedure for our new president, however: Take an aggressive stance even if you're wholly ignorant to the stance you're taking. The New START treaty was signed by the Russian and US presidents on April 8, 2010, in Prague.

"Trump also talked about his own popularity", the report says. In a presidential debate previous year, Trump displayed a tenuous understanding of the deal-or at least of the existence of some nuclear deal between the US and Russia-when he incorrectly referred to it as "Start UP" and presented a string of erroneous claims about the treaty.

"The Reuters report.suggests that he's extremely ill-informed about the most serious foreign policy, national security issues a president needs to know", said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association, a nonpartisan group focused on reducing nuclear stockpiles.

Relations between Russian Federation and America have also warmed, with Trump praising Putin in the run-up to his inauguration last month. Removing the cap on two of the world's largest nuclear powers could raise concerns about an arms race. "You would be making moral equivalences between Putin's killing of journalists, political opponents and USA military activities".

Moscow has previously downplayed suggestions by Trump about reductions in nuclear arms, including the suggestion of a "grand bargain" following Trump's interview with several European news agencies that suggested a nuclear arms treaty for sanctions relief.

Just before the call, the president also usually receives an oral "pre-briefing" from his national security adviser and top subject-matter aide, they said.
