Al Franken Call Jeff Sessions' Russia Answer 'Insulting'

Maryland's US attorney was grilled Tuesday on Capitol Hill with Russian Federation as the main focus of senators' questions.

If confirmed, Rod Rosenstein, nominated by Republican President Donald Trump to be deputy attorney general, would take control of the Russian Federation investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself from the case.

The recusal means the Russian Federation inquiry would fall under Rosenstein's watch. Al Franken (D-Minn.) during his January confirmation hearing about ongoing talks between Trump associates and Russian government representatives during the campaign.

At one point on Tuesday, committee chair Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) bemoaned Franken's initial line of inquiry, saying it consisted of a "gotcha question".

Trump's Attorney General Jeff Sessions has denied misleading a Congressional hearing on his meetings with Russian Federation.

Russian Federation was the focus right out of the gate.

"I would assume that, if the president is not telling the truth about this, those who know the truth would say what the truth is", said Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Rosenstein went only so far as to commit to appoint a special counsel "whenever I determine it's appropriate based on the policies and procedures of the Department of Justice".

"I would hope and I would agree with you that that would not happen", Rosenstein responded a moment later.

The hearing on Capitol Hill came at the same time as a demonstration brewed in Baltimore.

Democrats were calling for the resignation of Sessions because he lied under oath.

He will testify at a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Tuesday.

"I say so with some sadness and regret because of my respect for you", said Blumenthal, D-Conn. "It struck me very hard and that's what I focused my answer on". Former Attorney General Eric Holder appointed Rosenstein to investigate who was leaking classified information about the Obama administration's role in cyberattacks against Iran. "Mr. Rosenstein, feel free to space out on this one", Sen. Then Grassley banged his gavel down and called on Sen. The latest controversy surrounds Rosenstein's would-be boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions. "Rod has not only aggressively prosecuted risky gangs and criminals in Maryland, but also elected officials who violated the public's trust".

The nominee at hand was Rod Rosenstein, the Maryland U.S. attorney who has been tapped to be Sessions' top deputy.

"Those skills will be put to the test in the coming months."

Rosenstein keeps a low profile, yet perhaps never before has the selection of a second-in-command at the Department of Justice attracted this much scrutiny this early in a presidential administration. "That means following the facts wherever they lead, pursuing justice, and doing the right thing - without regard for politics".

Sessions' recusal would leave the responsibility for overseeing such a probe - including whether to appoint a special counsel - to the deputy attorney general. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., asked Rosenstein if - under the appropriate circumstances - he would support the "appointment of an independent special counsel to look into" allegations Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 USA presidential election in favor of Trump. 'The goal was to undermine public faith in the United States democratic process, and to harm the campaign of Secretary Clinton in favor of President Trump, ' she said.
