After its stunner, Mississippi State turns to title game

Mississippi State's diminutive point guard also will have to deal with her growing status in Bulldogs lore, among the likes of Dak Prescott, after a buzzer-beating overtime shot that ended UConn's record 111-game winning streak and sent State to its first women's NCAA Tournament championship game.

The UConn Huskies lost in an upset to Mississippi State in the women's NCAA Final Four game March 31.

Head coach Vic Schaefer was livid and needed to be restrained. "There is no reason to be scared". It was a just ending as the Bulldogs were the better team for most of the game. At the time, it was the worst defeat in tournament history. Mississippi State ends UConn's historic streak with the 66-64 win.

The Huskies hadn't lost in 865 days, with that defeat coming to Stanford on November 17, 2014.

Vivians, who led Mississippi State with 12 points in the first half, made a layup to put the Bulldogs ahead 29-13 with 7:36 left until halftime.

Wilson cited for me what Auriemma said about his team's 111-game winning streak.

Perhaps the only person who knew this game would be this competitive was Huskies coach Geno Auriemma, who spent much of the last week reminding his team that few - if any - of them had anything to do with the 98-38 point drubbing past year.

"They're really grounded. Our kids know what's coming down the pike", he said. "They just have this attitude like, 'Everything will be fine, don't worry about it.' And yet they keep winning". In Starkville, Georgia was within 10 points of Mississippi State, but fell 58-49.

CT recovered quickly after halftime, taking their first lead within three minutes. This was the first time this season that UConn was losing in the fourth quarter.

Mississippi State flipped the script on CT this time around as the Bulldogs claimed a 16-point lead early in the second quarter.

A'ja Wilson had 13 points and 19 rebounds for SC (32-4). Sophomore guard Katie Lou Samuelson added 15 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs and Gamecocks will square off for the national championship at 6 p.m.

"We talk about it all the time how hard it is to win in this environment", he said. You now have the opportunity to start a new streak. Maybe we were ready for everything else, but maybe we're just not mature enough for this. Like Cinella, he watched the game on television from his CT home, and thought it was a great night of college basketball. "You walk in the locker room, there's not a lot of jumping around". Done. This team was mortal all season but showed it for the first time Friday night in the evening's second semifinal.

The shocking final vaulted the Bulldogs (34-4) into Sunday's championship game against SEC rival SC.

Cinella, who took American International College to the NCAA Division II championship game in 2006 and reached the Elite Eight twice, called the upset good for the women's game. However, UConn then missed a three-pointer and couldn't do anything on a second chance even after getting an offensive rebound.

" 'The looks in their faces weren't looks of defeat. It was obvious she wanted the ball", Manning said of William. 'We couldn't play that sleep time basketball. Well South Carolina better have their fighting spirit going on Sunday or they just must get an Itty Bitty shock, too!

Morgan Williams finished with 13 points for Mississippi State while Victoria Vivian had a game-high 19 points.

"I thought I'd never see a game as great as a few years ago when Louisville upset the Baylor Bears featuring the mighty (and mighty tall 6'8") Brittney Griner.
