Bruins set to start series with Senators on Wednesday

It'll be his job to poke and prod any Bruin he can get his hands on and bait them into bad penalties.

Boston Bruins centre Frank Vatrano (72) celebrates a goal during the third period of the first round of NHL Stanley Cup playoff hockey action in Ottawa on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

The lone Ottawa goal came from Bobby Ryan, who took a loose puck that was muffed along the boards by Bruins' defenseman Adam McQuaid right to the front of the net. The Senators had a number of chances and know if they want to tie the series Saturday afternoon they will need to find a way to bury them.

"We didn't sustain what we were doing for 60 minutes and we paid for it", Boucher said.

The Senators know they'll need to score more than one goal to win in the playoffs. "That alleviates some of the frustration knowing that [we can win] if we stick with it and do the things we're supposed to do - get it behind their D and create turnovers if you can't get it in off the rush - and be effective on the power play. I think everyone kind of realizes how lucky you are to be in the playoffs every year". "And obviously two shifts killed us ... nine turnovers in two shifts".

Tuukka Rask was outstanding in net for Boston, making 26 saves to pick up his 29th career postseason victory. He made a huge stop on Mark Stone with eight seconds left that would have tied it, but captain Erik Karlsson wasn't pleased with the Senators' performance.

It wasn't for complete lack of effort, so there's some light in among the darkness that was the middle 20 minutes of play.

"Can someone in the advanced stat community tell us if that is good?" came a response from the official Senators' Twitter feed.

Rask will be looking to carry his playoff push momentum into this series.

There's no way the Bruins will get past the second round - if they're lucky enough to take down the Senators.

"The positive, we were only down a goal going into the third, even though in the second we didn't generate much". It was about trying to prepare for them for what was going to happen - the intensity and the emotion that comes into a playoff game right from the start.

The Senators were 4-0-0 against the Bruins this season, but each game was a close one that could have gone either way. Not only did they pull ahead 1-0, they rebounded from a hard start in the first by holding Boston to no shots in the period. The Bruins have issues on the back line, which will be tested by a fast Ottawa team.

Losing Krejci - a late scratch for Wednesday's series opener - for an extended period of time would be a major blow for the Bruins.

He said the feeling in the Sens dressing room between the second and third periods was all positive. With the injury bug hitting the defense at the wrong time after the Bruins were relatively healthy all year, winning this playoff series will be a tall task for Boston. Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki led the National Hockey League in penalty minutes this season, with Sens leader Dion Phaneuf right behind him.

Both teams took the day off and will return to the ice Friday. Of their last 19 games, the Bruins have scored in 12 of their games, meaning that the Bruins' powerplay is on the upturn.

"Their goalie played well".

Boucher said Methot could play Wednesday, but a decision needs to be made whether or not it's in his and the team's best interest to give him a few more days rest. "There was mistakes on both ends and they were able to capitalize on both of theirs, one after the other". Even Colin Miller, if we moved him up, [Chara] played with him previous year.
