'Iron Fist' co-creator defends Netflix show, says hero is not 'Oriental'

'Iron Fist' co-creator defends Netflix show, says hero is not 'Oriental'

Marvel's newest Netflix series "Iron Fist" was released March 17 to the streaming site.

Perhaps some of the blowback stems from the controversy over the casting of Danny Rand, portrayed by "Game of Thrones" veteran Finn Jones.

"On episode 10 of #IronFist this show is brilliant what where the critics talking about", one fan tweeted. "They are first and foremost made for fans". It would seem odd to have that series launch either too far before or behind the TV show without risking the obvious synergy. Danny Rand is going to team up with Daredevil, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones for a series called "The Defenders", and Danny is the only cartoony hero in the bunch. There's no more of an outsider than an Asian-American: We feel like outsiders in Asia and we feel like outsiders at home.

In an article titled Marvel, Please Cast An Asian American Iron Fist, journalist Kevin Chow said Marvel had a "chance to add even more diversity to its interconnected cinematic universe". All we know for sure is that Finn Jones did not. Might he appear in Iron Fist? Danny Rand returns from the dead to NY to reclaim his birthright, Rand Industries, which is now being run by his childhood friends Ward and Joy Meachum. Rand was determined to reclaim his family company upon his return, but he needed to face other issues regarding his identity as "Iron Fist". This little-known Marvel comics character was altered to fit into the plot of Netflix and Marvel's Iron Fist series and it paid off in a big way. He said he had no problems with the show sticking with the source material and casting a white actor as a master of supernatural martial arts.

That spurred Brougher to produce his short film Iron and Rage, a re-imagination of Netflix's Iron Fist with an Asian-American lead and diverse supporting cast.

Thomas pointed out the fictitious nature of Iron Fist in response to critiques.

And put forth the argument that, hey, there's no narrative reason that Iron Fist can't be Caucasian.

Tan said he knew Danny Rand was white in the comics, but thought his martial arts background gave him a leg up on the role. "I know Oriental isn't the right word now, either".

"Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature". At heart, their argument says that there is no need to change the basics of a longstanding character. Unlike "Luke Cage" and "Jessica Jones", "Iron Fist" avoids having a weak final third by starting off weak from the get-go. The Iron Fist was a weapon that allowed Danny to punch through any object or person, it also has some other cool abilities you'll see in the series. The Kunlun Mountains are a real mountain range in China, for instance. It's one of my all-time favorite shows, and Job will go down as one of the best characters invented for television, but Bunker was another character that was right up there because he was so compelling and interesting to watch. Certainly, Asian people themselves exist in our world. Claire Temple gives the reality checks the show needs without being too much while Colleen Wing is a flawless mirror to Danny Rand.
