Jordan Spieth's Masters Heartbreak Returns With Disastrous Quadruple Bogey

For what it's worth, Golf Channel stat guru Justin Ray reports that no player has ever made worse than a 7 on any hole in the Masters and won that week.

Spieth was making serene progress before a sloppy bogey at the 14th hole followed by a shocking nine at the par-five 15th ruined his day, but it's a testament to his mental strength that he bounced back to post a competitive number, largely thanks to an immediate birdie at the 16th.

Most of the damage came on the par-5 15th, where Spieth took a 9, finding water in front of the green and then going way beyond the green in the swirling winds that played havoc with most players in the opening round of the year's first major event.

While Spieth survived the Par-3 12th hole in the opening round of this year's Masters, things took a turn for the worse with a bogey on hole 14 and then he completely fell apart on the par-5 15th where Spieth carded a quadruple-bogey nine.

Spieth's humiliating meltdown at the par-3 12th in Sunday's final round in 2016 quickly became the stuff of legend and in the 12 months since he has made it clear he'd like to put the quadruple bogey seven he made there, to lose the tournament, to rest. "I was stuck in the 15-is-a-birdie-hole mentality and it kind of bit me a little bit". Even though today wasn't maybe my best ball striking round, I still hit a lot of good shots. "So I didn't take my medicine".

The ball hit the green and immediately rolled back and into the water. He did birdie the 13th and completed a strong up-and-down from behind the green for par at No. 18.

"You think of it as a birdie hole with it being a par five and unfortunately I still thought of it as a birdie hole today".

"I'm going to probably need to play something under par tomorrow, which puts a little bit of added pressure".

"And obviously now, 3-over, I feel like I need to snag something (low) tomorrow". Round 1 was not an easy one for the major's participants, especially 2015 Masters Champion Jordan Spieth. "I think if we hit it three minutes later the ball could have landed in a totally different location". "But I was relieved to see it down and on the green". "And I guess everybody else felt maybe more than I did on it". Spieth is the guy you have to beat, not the guy who beats himself. But do it through patience and taking advantage of the par-5s.

Granted, it's now four over-par rounds in succession for Spieth at Augusta, but let's not cast aside his sensational record in the Masters too quickly - it would be a surprise were he not somewhere close to his best back at the course on Friday afternoon. "Anything under par today was good and even par is still a good score and one over's not bad".
