'Thirteen Reasons Why' shows how adults can really mess up teen angst

Actress singer Selena Gomez arrives at the 2016 American Music Awards at Microsoft Theater

"13 Reasons Why" has critics advising TV viewers to prepare for a mature and potent experience when the Netflix series, filmed in part last summer at Sebastopol's Analy High School, becomes available Friday.

Selena's debut as a producer, 13 Reasons Why, is the story of a teen called Hannah who commits suicide, and the 13 people who receive tapes explaining how they contributed to her death. On Wednesday, the 24-year-old singer posted a video on Twitter debuting her own rendition of the '80s hit "Only You". According to Bryce, Hannah "wanted it" and even though she didn't say she did "girls play games" and that's why Bryce figured it was OK. We follow protagonist Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette, all taciturn glances and withdrawn anger), a high schooler still reeling from the suicide of his friend Hannah (Katherine Langford) a week earlier.

The added plotlines seem at least partially meant to make a second season a possibility, even though the 13 episodes, all sent to critics, are amply conclusive.

But Clay isn't the first person to have received the tapes. While blue and orange happen to complement one another perfectly, she chose the shade because it has a deep, emotional significance in the plot of 13 Reasons Why.

Little did Bryce know, Clay was recording him on tape, the same way Hannah recorded her conversation with Mr. You can't underestimate how instructive this show could be for a teen audience and the parents struggling to decipher them. "That's when I was in the vehicle driving and I immediately felt that was the best way to tell this particular story". Hannah Baker takes the extra step; she wants everyone who hears the tapes (all 13 people are supposed to listen, then pass it on to the next name, or a copy of the tapes goes public) to not only know their crime against her, but to share that burden with all the others. Hannah isn't the only one dealing with demons, either.

Selena Gomez is loving life and you can see it all over her face.

"I had a dialogue with Brian [Yorkey] from the get-go about what songs should be on the soundtrack", Minnette has said.

"She's so wonderful", he told us. But even its flaws help to mimic the show's ultimate goal: to paint a gorgeous, and awful tapestry of what it means to live on this planet - and what it means for those that stay behind when we leave it.
