John Klingberg Scores as Sweden Advances to Gold Medal Game at Worlds

Holders Canada booked their place in the Ice Hockey World Championship final against Sweden with a dramatic 4-2 comeback victory over fellow heavyweights Russian Federation in Saturday's semi-final in Cologne.

Nicklas Backstrom and Oliver Ekman Larsson scored in the shootout, while goaltender Henrik Lundqvist stopped each of Canada's four attempts.

"That was one of the greatest hockey games I have ever been a part of", said Canada head coach Jon Cooper.

Sweden, with half as many shots as the Canadians at that point, managed to take a surprise lead when Victor Hedman threw a backhander through traffic and the puck bounced on the ice and slipped under Calvin Pickard seconds before the end of the second period. When Lundqvist made the final save on Canada's Mitch Marner, the Swedes poured over the bench to hug him.

Ryan O'Reilly tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal early in the third.

Henrik Lundqvist, who was a late addition to Gronborg's roster after the New York Rangers' elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs, ultimately proved the hero.

"They kept sending their guys out of the zone looking for a breakaway so we knew they were going to try to press".

Jonathan Bernier took over for Gibson and stopped 16 shots in his first appearance in almost two weeks for the Ducks, calling it a "weird situation".

Canada hasn't won three straight gold medals at this event since the early 1950s. "I wasn't really friends with the puck there in the second period". Sean Couturier was whistled for tripping with 10:51 left in overtime but the Canadian penalty killers were up to the task.

Sweden would take the lead for good at 4:36 of the second period with John Klingberg getting the goal. It was the first time in the tournament that Canada failed to score the opening goal. Joel (Lundqvist) and Krugs (Marcus Kruger) did a good job in front of the goalie and I don't think he saw it. The teams skated to a 1-1 tie through one period. Colorado forward Matt Duchene didn't have a point.

Canada was seeking its third World title in a row, something it has not accomplished since the Edmonton Mercurys, Lethbridge Maple Leafs and Edmonton Mercurys, again, won consecutive championships representing Canada in 1950, 1951 and 1952, respectively.
