Lawmaker apologizes for using 'lynch' over Confederate statue removal

The day after the city of New Orleans removed the last of its Confederate monuments from public display, a Republican lawmaker who represents the community where Emmett Till was lynched in MS wrote that leaders who work to have such monuments taken down "should be lynched".

Following the removal of four Confederate monuments from the city of New Orleans, a MS lawmaker is in hot water for his comments on the removal.

Oliver set off a wave of criticism after posting on his Facebook page Saturday night that the destruction of monuments is "heinous and horrific" and that Louisiana leaders should be lynched. He went on to make his threat against anyone wanting to "destroy historical monuments of OUR HISTORY", saying: "They should be LYNCHED!"

"Let it be known, I will do all in my power to prevent this from happening in our state", added Oliver, who has been in the state legislature since 2016.

His post appears to have been deleted but he has not yet responded to calls for an apology.

"I think if the leadership in MS state government wants to be responsible, they should join the call for Rep. Oliver's resignation". Many called on him to resign. After seeing Oliver's post, Mississippi State Sen. "However, that opinion does not necessarily reflect that of his fellow legislators".

Mississippi GOP chairman Joe Nosef condemned the remarks when reached for comment Monday. Derrick Simmons said in a statement posted to Twitter.

Mississippi Rep. Sonya Williams-Barnes, a member of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus, described Oliver's comments as "shameful, but seemingly extremely comfortable, choice of words". Bell wrote, according to the news station.

The mayor of New Orleans says a MS lawmaker's remark about lynching shows the city was right "to tackle the issue of race head-on" by removing Confederate statues. The removal process finally began in April, two years after the city council vote.

The Associated Press' Kevin McGill contributed from New Orleans. "But we can begin a new chapter of New Orleans's history by placing these monuments, and the legacy of oppression they represent, in museums and other spaces where they can be viewed in an appropriate educational setting as examples of our capacity to change". Like Oliver, many felt that their Confederate heritage was under attack.
