South Korea fires shots at North Korea after object crosses border

As recently as January past year, South Korean soldiers fired warning shots at a suspected North Korean drone that crossed the western part of the border, the most sensitive part of the demilitarized zone. Kim has frequently expressed outrage at the USA, most recently for massive military exercises conducted with South Korea and for US deployment of an anti-missile system created to counter the Pyongyang missile threat. Sunday, it test-fired a long medium-range ballistic missile "Hwasong 12".

China called on Monday for dialogue to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula after North Korea carried out a new missile test.

The Security Council first imposed sanctions on Pyongyang in 2006 and ratcheted up the measures in response to five nuclear tests and two long-range missile launches.

The North says it needs missiles and nuclear weapons to deter any attack by the United States.

The South Korean army believes that with its latest missile test, the North has managed to obtain valuable performance data to continue improving its technology, said a defence official on Monday.

More than 90 machine gun rounds were fired as warning shots under a related manual and the object disappeared from radar screens, according to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "The whole world looks attractive and feels happy when I see the Earth filmed by a rocket launched by us", Kim is reported to have said. Kim Hyo-sun, Arirang News.

North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper said in a commentary, "The Trump administration would be well advised to lend an ear to the voices of concern that are heard from the US and the global community".

"Entering mass production this early in the development phase is risky, but perhaps a risk North Korea feels comfortable managing", said Michael Elleman of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

KCNA said last week's missile test put Hawaii and Alaska within range.

Solid-fuel missiles have their fuel loaded before being moved into place, allowing them to be launched faster and with more secrecy.

Experts have indicated that five of these photos, that appeared on page 3 of the daily, seem to have been taken when the missile was re-entering the lower atmosphere.

John Schilling, a missile expert contributing to Washington's 38 North think tank, estimated it would take until at least 2020 for North Korea to be able to develop an ICBM capable of reaching the U.S. mainland and until 2025 for one powered by solid fuel.

Aside from China and North Korea, the talks include the United States, South Korea, Russia and Japan.

The statement further warned more such indigenously-made weapons capable of striking the United States would be tested soon.

There was no immediate comment in North Korea's state-run media, and no reports that the North had returned fire.

A senior Japanese official said his country would target the reclusive state's foreign currency earnings.

China called on "all parties to remain calm, exercise self-restraint and avoid taking provocative actions that would escalate the tensions".
