South Korean military: Pyongyang launches suspected ballistic missile

Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that the missile landed in an area between Japan's Sado and Oki islands, in their exclusive economic zone. "It also clearly violates resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council".

The greenback added 0.1 percent to 111.410 yen, with the safe-haven Japanese currency showing little reaction to North Korea's missile launch.

South Korea's new president, Moon Jae-In, ordered a meeting of the national security council to assess the launch, which came a day after North Korea said its leader Kim Jong-un had overseen a test of a new anti-aircraft weapons system.

"As agreed during the G-7 summit, the North Korean problem is the worldwide community's top priority". "Working with the United States, we will take specific action to deter North Korea". "This is in direct opposition to our demands in regards to the denuclearization and peace of the Korean Peninsula".

The test comes during a period of heightened tensions with North Korea. It says the program is necessary to counter U.S. aggression. "Our military is closely monitoring North Korean military and maintaining readiness posture", the report added.

Analysts say Japan's options for "concrete action" are also limited.

We are working with our Interagency partners on a more detailed assessment. The missile is fired from a mobile launch vehicle.

The sanctions cut off nearly all exchange between the rival states that had been set up since 2000, when South Korea's "sunshine policy" brought a period of cautious rapprochement.

But current economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations and others seem to have done nothing to slow North Korea's missile program.

"The U.S. seems to have been caught off guard by the North's recent rapid success in developing Hwasong-12 mid-range missile and Pukguksong-2 solid-fuel intermediate-range missile", a military source here speculated.

The short-range ballistic missile that North Korea fired on Monday was assumed to be a Scud series missile that was originally designed by the Soviet and then developed into a weapon by Nazis. The Scud-class missile fired reached an altitude of 120km, the military spokesman told a briefing.

On UNSC's condemnation over its missile test, North Korea blatantly rebuked the statement saying that it will continue to develop more advanced and diversified nuclear weapons. In the early hours of this morning it launched what appeared to be a short-range missile from Wonsan on its east coast.

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo on Monday for talks with Shotaro Yachi, the head of the National Security Council, Japan's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Trump has sought tougher sanctions against the North, having warned last month that a "major, major conflict" with the isolated state was possible. It was tracked for six minutes, U.S.
