'Dead Woman Walking': Amid Election Fallout, Theresa May Stands On Shaky Ground

Theresa May today struck a business as usual tone as she announced that she will carry on as Britain's Prime

The party is seeking support from Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to stay in power. Instead, the Conservatives lost their majority and now must depend on a small, sectarian Northern Ireland party to hold on to power.

"The idea that the British government could be taking sides, having been the guarantor of the Good Friday Agreement and the subsequent peace agreements is really troubling", she told Sky News.

May's weakened position in the party rules out big changes to the Cabinet lineup.

As rumours swirled about plots to oust May, Johnson denied he was planning a leadership challenge. Labor was divided, the pundits said, and leader Jeremy Corbyn a hard-left radical who enjoyed the staunch backing of grassroots supporters but could not unite his deeply divided parliamentary wing.

It has five times opposed a vote that would have allowed gay people to get married, and Northern Ireland remains the only part of the United Kingdom where gay marriage is illegal.

But no deal has yet been finalised and talks on the arrangement will continue during the week as Mrs May desperately tries to shore up her position after losing her Commons majority in the election.

European Union leaders expressed fear that Theresa's shock loss of her majority would delay the Brexit talks, due to begin on June 19, and so raise the risk of negotiations failing.

No party was able to win more than 326 seats, which is needed to form a majority in Commons, in the election.

Ahead of the election the party was backed by the Loyalist Communities Council, which is an umbrella body comprised of three of the main Loyalist Paramilitary groups, the Ulster Defence Association, the Ulster Volunteer Force and Red Hand Commando.

As the British media mercilessly pointed out, May, who was ahead by 20 points in polls when she called the election in April, conducted a bad campaign, while Jeremy Corbyn, the hard-left leader of the Labour Party, ran a very good one.

Many senior Conservatives say May should stay, for now, to provide stability. But the most remarkable aspect of the vote was the 68-year-old Corbyn's attraction of young voters.

"I don't think she does have a majority in the House of Commons for leaving the single market", Anna Soubry, who campaigned for Britain to stay in the European Union ahead of last year's referendum, told Sky News. In 2015, DUP Health Minister Jim Wells said children raised by gay parents were more likely to be abused or neglected.

"The only thing that might save her in the short-term is that any potential successor would be thrown headfirst into the complex Brexit negotiations".

Here are a few questions over what it means and its implications for the country.

"We can confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party have agreed to the principles of an outline agreement to support the Conservative government", a spokesperson for May said.

That said May had "spoken with the DUP to discuss finalizing" a deal in the coming week.

The Conservatives and the DUP won't form a formal coalition government but the latter will support the government regardless. The party also wants to kill off the idea of a "special status" which would see Northern Ireland more closely aligned with the Republic of Ireland after Brexit.

Irish premier Enda Kenny has told Theresa May the outworking of the General Election must not put the Good Friday Agreement at risk.

Northern Ireland is now at a political impasse, after a power-sharing agreement broke down in January over a scandal involving a green energy scheme.

The British government doesn't have long to ink a deal.

This would give the Tories the numbers to pass a Queen's Speech on June 19, which will set out their legislative agenda. The speech will be followed by several days of debate and a vote.

"This is still on", he said, adding he would vote down the government's programme when it comes before parliament this month.
