Georgia race finally heads to voters; DC watching closely

Now, he's up against Republican candidate Karen Handel in the most expensive House race ever.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise's (R-La.) campaign Twitter account on Tuesday touted Republican Karen Handel as "a great candidate" for Georgia's 6th Congressional District as voters head to the polls for the special election.

Striking a tone vastly more bipartisan than the "Make Trump Furious" message his campaign spread in the lead up to the April primary, Ossoff, 30, spoke of his willingness to work with President Donald Trump - but also to hold him accountable. Ossoff has run as a moderate Democrat, distancing himself from Sen.

Jon Ossoff, Democratic candidate for Georgia's 6th congressional district talks to supporters during a stop at a campaign office in Chamblee, Ga., Monday, June 19, 2017.

In a series of tweets that began Monday morning, Trump is casting the election as something of a pivot point for his agenda and presidency.

Handel is using an election-eve rally to tell suburban Atlanta Republicans that her experience is what the traditionally conservative district needs.

"I would note that Secretary Handel, when she was secretary of state, showed negligence and lack of competence in responding to some of the concerns that were raised at that time, which, again, is consistent with her record of incompetence at the Komen foundation when she cut off funding for lifesaving breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood", Ossoff told Willis. He reminded his former constituents of the district's GOP pedigree, electing eventual Speaker Newt Gingrich and future U.S. Sen.

Handel supports Trump's decision to leave the Paris Climate Accord.

CNN spent time with voters on opposite sides of the Congressional race, many with strong feelings about Trump.

But what are the actual politics of the patrons of Panera in the ultimate Panera district - the Georgia Sixth, where Democrat Jon Ossoff goes up against Republican Karen Handel on Tuesday?

The country's attention will turn to Georgia today, where voters in suburban Atlanta will decide the outcome of a bitterly fought race with national implications. Ossoff grew up in the district but now lives just outside the border near Emory University, while his fiancee finishes medical school.

Many see the Georgia race as a potential preview of the 2018 midterm elections. State officials, though, say they're confident the technology is secure.

But he defied expectations when he catapulted from obscurity to almost winning the House race in April, while running in a longtime conservative stronghold in Georgia.

Outside GOP groups have spent $12 million to support Handel.

Democrats have plenty of energy nationally, but it hasn't translated to the electoral scoreboard.

Collectively, the Georgia and SC special races are being viewed as a potential harbinger of things to come in next November's midterm elections.

For Republicans, it's about defense, with a healthy dose of fear.

The seat became available when Tom Price vacated to become Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The cost of elections, especially for open seats, has gone up considerably in recent years.

A little-known political action committee unveiled a last-minute ad trying to link Ossoff to the shooting of a Republican House leader and others at a GOP congressional baseball team practice last week outside Washington. "He came out with an ad in the final days that said he wasn't soft on terrorism".
