Matt Murray: Pens' G Matt Murray loses; Cup Final tied 2-2

Nashville's Calle Jarnkrok was the first to get the puck past Matt Murray, scoring 5:09 into the first period. Sidney Crosby, of all people, broke in alone off a sharp pass from defenseman Brian Dumoulin to tie it just 66 seconds later with a insane fake of Rinne that had people thinking Crosby was back. It was his first goal in the Final since 2009, but it wasn't almost enough.

Gaudreau's goal was his third of the series. A quick video review confirmed that the puck did cross the line.

In all, Rinne stopped 23 of 24 Penguins shots in the Predators' 4-1 win to tie the Stanley Cup Final series at 2-2. It was the eighth time Malkin, with his NHL-best 26 points this postseason, was held without a shot.

The Predators have been the better team for much of this series, but unlike in the games in Pittsburgh, it's now translating into actual victories. The defending Cup champions are looking a little tiresome and are in need of a glossy paint job.

The Mike Fisher diving assist.

Nashville is outshooting Pittsburgh 15-14 so far.

"I had some looks and I felt I just tried to shoot as hard as I could and it went it", Arvidsson, who last scored in Game 4 of the first round, said of his breakaway goal in the second period. The puck barely snuck inside the goal line, bouncing off a lunging Matt Murray's blocker pad and back out in a split second.

Rinne's most timely save may have been his stop on Chris Kunitz's breakaway at 3:29 of the second. "[Rinne] is incredible. In these big moments, he's come out and shined for us and he made the saves when we needed them tonight". Two goals for, nine goals against: two losses.

If you've been watching Nashville throughout the playoffs, you've probably noticed how locked in their fanbase is right now.

He is, like the cagey Peter Laviolette, two wins away from his second Stanley Cup and, right now, those two wins seem nearly like a mountain climb away without hiking boots for the struggling Penguins.

The lead didn't last long.

"Somehow he managed to keep it out", said Guentzel, who scored four goals in the series' first three games. He's proven that brief mental lapses on the biggest stage of his career were not crippling; better goalies than he have lost their confidence on the big stage and not regained it so quickly. He had 11 points in the first round, seven in the second, six in the third, he has two in four games in the Cup Final. He was so good on Monday night, he may have even played himself back into the Conn Smythe conversation.

And Mayor of Nashville Megan Barry tapped into public sentiment, excusing anyone who might turn up late to work as a result of staying up to watch the game. He tested his injured left foot and ankle by skating Sunday but said he remains day to day. But he banged the boards in apparent frustration and limped toward the locker room He was announced as a scratch from the lineup.

Minutes later, just as the Nashville crowd was getting revved up - giving the team its first standing ovation of the contest - the Penguins struck back.

His absence leaves the Penguins without a veteran penalty killer.

The Nashville PA played the Superman theme at the next break.

"I would've voted for our '87 team", Wayne Gretzky said.

He has had a masterful two-year run as coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The prior record rating was 22.5, which was established in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. Second, Crosby is playing monster games.

Even basketball great Charles Barkley was in attendance, and said he was having more fun in "Smashville" than he would watching another beatdown by Golden State in the NBA Finals. Today, he roots for Columbus defenseman Seth Jones because his father, Popeye, once played in the National Basketball Association.

It was prior to Game 4 when word filtered down that the National Hockey League would not be accepting Conn Smythe Trophy ballots with two names on them. They said you can't get fan support from the south, not for hockey. No, the Pittsburgh captain insists he did not complain about Subban's breath in Game 3, saying Subban made that up.

With the Predators leading 1-0 on a goal from Jarnkrok, Crosby somehow caught Nashville's defence napping and scored on a breakaway pass from Brian Dumoulin.

Now, as the dust settles on Game 4, the roles have reversed. "It's just the first shift of the game, that's it". A downtown amphitheater was also opened up and jammed to capacity.
