'The Mummy' fails to reinvent a classic franchise

Universal announced last month a shared monster movie universe, which will kick off with the launch of the new The Mummy movie starring Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe.

However, The Telegraph's critic is slightly more convinced, describing the film as "patently ridiculous - and surprisingly watchable".

"I just love movies period and I love to entertain an audience". And didn't Van Helsing try to put the Wolfman, Frankenstein, and Dracula in one movie and fail miserably?

It's been nearly a decade since we last saw a movie involving The Mummy from Universal Studios.

Nothing quite comes together in this insane mix of action, jokes, ancient curses and the undead, and even Tom Cruise's star power can't glue the thing together.

Perhaps the person Ahamet wields the most power over in The Mummy is Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), a soldier of fortune who becomes cursed after he unearths the princess' sarcophagus 5,000 years after she was entombed. But unfortunately for Nick, the cat in this game happens to be immortal and all powerful.

Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella; Kingsman: The Secret Service) was an Egyptian Princess planning to take over her father's throne but when he has another child, a son, she sees her plans falling apart. The 2017 film is much the same.

And never mind that no one is exactly clamoring for the big screen return of "The Mummy" - the movie gods (er, Universal Studios execs) have decreed it is time for another "Mummy" movie and summertime deems that a big blockbuster must open every week. "Sofia is attractive, powerful, terrifying, but very alluring; you want to be with her but then you're scared of her". His comedic timing is strong and, like his Jack Reacher character, this role requires him to play a man with iffy ethical principles.

Not counting Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde, of course. This reboot of the Universal monster series seeks to update its classic creatures in the action-adventure genre.

Megan Leavey - Kate Mara stars in this docudrama, based on the true story of a young Marine corporal who trains an aggressive military combat dog with whom she completes more than 100 missions before injuries endanger their fates. This time, however, Tom Cruise anchors "The Mummy" with a big budget but a conspicuously hollow script. That movie inspired two follow-ups with mixed results. As for action, it's done and dusted within the first 20 minutes of the film during a skirmish between Morton, Vail and the Iraqi insurgents. Cinematic universes require you to care about characters and want to follow the consequences of their actions, and "The Mummy" is instantly forgettable, with characters that are equally unmemorable.
