Pentagon Program Spent Millions Investigating UFOs

Former senate majority leader and retired Nevada lawmaker Harry Reid was AATIP's catalyst, earmarking over $20 million of the defense department's budget to fund it. Billionaire Robert Bigelow's aerospace company secured numerous program's early contracts.

Pentagon spokesperson Dana White, cited by Politico, confirmed that the program existed up until 2012, when it was wrapped up as "there were other, higher priority issues that merited funding", she said, adding that it was in the Pentagon's "best interest" to redirect funds.

The Department of Defense (DoD) allotted $22 million that was apparently deeply hidden in the $600 billion annual DoD budget specifically for something called the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.

Still, the Pentagon's engagement here is a big surprise: This is one of the few times - if not the first - that an arm of the US government confirmed the existence of a modern program created to look into extraterrestrial events.

However, people who work or have worked for the program say that only the government funding was eliminated in 2012.

AATIP had funds earmarked until 2012, though sources told the New York Times it has continued to operate and investigate potential sightings.

"This was so-called black money", Reid admitted to the Times.

According to the New York Times, the bulk of the $22M dollars actually went to a friend of senator Harry Reid. Following his resignation, he joined the for-profit To The Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences.

"Two F-18s approach, the four aviators see that the object has no wings or exhaust - it is white, oblong, some 40 ft long and perhaps 12 ft thick", Mellon said, describing the incident at the launch of the project that is aimed at deepening the research into the UFOs in October.

Experts spent years investigating reports of unidentified flying objects under the program, which was run by military intelligence official Luis Elizondo deep within the Pentagon's maze. Elizondo told reporters that he did have a successor, though he couldn't name them. "I'm not embarrassed or ashamed or sorry I got this thing going". He said the program was "one of the good things" he did while in office. "I've done something that no one has done before".

An ex-member of Congress staff told Politico that the goal of the programme may have been to surveil the technological developments of rival foreign countries.
