Widespread Flu Hits Earlier This Season

The pervasiveness of the flu in the United States appears to be similar to what was seen during peak flu season from 2014 to 2015, which was the most severe season in recent years, according to the CDC. So are hospitalizations and doctor visits for the flu.

Dr. Rachel Levine, the state's physician general and acting Health secretary, says it's not too late to get a shot.

In comparison, three deaths were recorded for all age groups for the entire flu season past year, according to the Public Health Department.

"It started early and it shows up relatively fast", said Richards. Public health officials saw an uptick in cases in early November, about a month ahead of schedule. During that season, influenza A H3N2 viruses dominated nationally.

The hospital said they have stocked up on the flu vaccine, which the Illinois Department of Public Health said is still the best way to deal with the threat of the flu, even into the second week of January. "But we don't know what's going to happen".

The hallmarks of flu are fever and body aches that accompany cough and congestion, Bergen said.

Pharmacies have also sold out of the medication prescribed by doctors to treat the flu due to increased demand.

PHAC's flu surveillance data are consistent with what health-care providers are observing, said Dr. Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialist at University Health Network in Toronto. 'I spent my Sunday night looking for Tamiflu for wholesale'.

"Influenza B is circulating much earlier than usual this season", the federal report notes. "We have the situation under control".

Australia, which USA public health officials follow closely in their flu forecasting in part because its winter is our summer, reported a record-high number of confirmed flu cases in 2017.

Sherlock said most of the people attending the health unit's fall 2017 flu vaccine clinics were seniors.

For example, the CDC reports that 46 states had widespread flu activity the last week of December.

The predominant strain found so far this season is H3N2, which causes more severe disease, more hospitalizations and more deaths than other strains, the Public Health Department said.

The report for Week 52 is the latest available from the CDC. In a normal flu season, which runs through April or May, roughly 100 people under age 65 die from flu in California, Watt said.

Iowa also was bumped up to "moderate" flu activity, up from "minimal" the week before.

Among all visits to doctors and other health care providers in the last week of December, almost 6 percent were patients seeking care for flu symptoms, according to the most recent state influenza report.

Influenza B accounted for 34 per cent of cases in the last week of 2017 and, as of December 30, about one-quarter of cases in the season.

Each year, the flu virus morphs and affects a different number of people in a different pattern.

The number of flu cases is continuing to rise across Canada, suggesting the peak of infections with one of the dominant circulating strains could come within a few weeks - or even sooner, say infectious diseases experts, who describe this influenza season as "unusual". The H3N2 strain seems to be especially virulent among older people and young children.

Derek Forster, medical director for infection, prevention, and control says the procedures are created to help protect, patients, visitors, and staff from exposure to the flu virus.

"Flu season is something that all school districts are concerned about, so we do everything we can to prevent people from missing school and that includes all our staff".

An estimated 9.2 million Americans have gotten sick with the flu each year since 2010.
