New raids on battered Syria rebel enclave kill 7: monitor

For example, in Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of the capital Damascus, the city's 400,000 residents have had no delivery of food and other relief supplies for more than two months.

Syrian regime air strikes on Eastern Ghouta killed at least 16 civilians on Tuesday, a monitor said, the latest in a string of deadly attacks on the rebel-held enclave near Damascus.

The global chemical weapons watchdog says it is investigating recent allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria.

Like Ankara, the USA entered the Syrian conflict in support of rebel groups such as the FSA that were trying to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, but Central Intelligence Agency funding for the insurgents dwindled as they were overshadowed by more powerful and radical groups such as the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front and the Islamic State militant group (ISIS).

Syrian state-run media said Tuesday that the Syrian army was responding to a shelling attack in Damascus by "armed groups" - an attack that they say killed five people, including two children, and injured 13 others.

Maj. Roman Filipov was flying over the town of Maasran in Idlib province after conducting airstrikes in the region when his Su-25 was hit with what Russian authorities said was a MANPAD.

The bombing was one of the bloodiest in the eastern Ghouta region for over a month.

Meanwhile, the lead investigator of a UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry on Syria said his team was looking into reports that bombs allegedly containing weaponised chlorine were used against civilians on two recent occasions, in the rebel held towns of Saraqeb, in Idlib, and Douma, in Eastern Ghouta.

"What is happening in eastern Ghouta is not simply a humanitarian crisis because aid is denied, these sieges involve the worldwide crimes of indiscriminate bombardment and deliberate starvation of the civilian population", stated Mr. Pinheiro.

Blocked access to aid in three major urban areas, growing displacement and more than 13 million people in need are adding to the humanitarian crisis, according to the UN.

Relations between Washington and Ankara have been strained, in part due to U.S. support for the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) in Syria.

Earlier this month, Egeland, had said the situation in Idlib province was "screaming for a ceasefire".

A senior Turkish official says the United States must put an end to policies that "poison" ties between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, including supporting Syrian Kurdish militia.

The military reassured that only terror targets and their shelters, positions, weapons, and equipment were being destroyed and the "utmost care and sensitivity" were being shown to not harm civilians and the environment.

In his press conference on Tuesday, Rouhani had wished that Turkey would stop the ongoing Turkish military operation in northern Syria, saying that it only increases tension in the war-torn country.

The body of Major Roman Filipov has reached Russian Federation and would be laid to rest in a military ceremony in southern Russian Federation on February 8, the statement said.

"It's really violent", said Tareq Abdelhaq, an activist. Roman Filipov. The ministry said he ejected himself from his jet, exchanged gunfire with the militants then blew himself up with a hand grenade when they closed in on him.

Ambassador Ismail Sefa Yuceer, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with The Point, made it clear that Ankara has no wish to take territory from another country, and that control of Afrin Region will be handed over to the Syrian regime at the end of the operation.
