Autonomous Uber SUV Kills Pedestrian In America

Self-Driving Uber Car Crashes In Arizona — Kills Pedestrian

Attorney Leeza Garber discusses Toyota's halt of its self-driving vehicle testing after an Uber crash and how police in North Carolina are requesting information from Google. The vehicle, part of Uber's autonomous driving test fleet, was in self-driving mode at the time of the crash and had an emergency backup driver behind the wheel.

Here's what you need to know about the crash, Uber's autonomous vehicle testing, and what's next.

Uber has halted all tests of its self-driving cars after one of the vehicles hit and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona late Sunday night, in the first known fatality in the USA from a driverless vehicle, reports The Wall Street Journal. No serious injuries were reported, and the driver of the other vehicle was cited for a violation.

Why was there a driver behind the wheel? Tech giants like Uber and Waymo as well as mainstream automakers have been testing self-driving cars around the world and the cars are said to be safer because they won't get distracted as humans.

All major vehicle manufacturers are investing in self-driving technologies, while latecomers are trying to disrupt the industry. The SUV was in autonomous mode at the time of the accident.

There were no signs Vasquez was impaired after the collision, Sgt. Ronald Elcock, a Tempe police spokesman, said in a press conference.

Having suspended self-driving vehicles in Phoenix, Uber is also said to be working with the police in the investigation.

Based on footage recorded by the vehicle, Moir said "it appears Uber would likely not be at fault" though the police department is not making a final declaration until its investigation is complete.

CEO Dara Khosrowshahi reacted on Twitter.

No videos of the crash have been released. Arizona's self-driving vehicle oversight committee, or which Biesty is a member, has not planned any meetings or actions, he said.

Which authorities are investigating the crash?

U.S. government safety investigators were sent to examine the crash site and Uber has suspended its test fleets of self-driving cars across the USA and Canada. Once the investigation concludes, the case will be referred to the Maricopa County attorney, who will determine whether to bring charges.

Why did this happen in Arizona? With the right testing and technology, self-driving cars could still join their ranks.

The union has been instrumental in the ongoing fight about proposed legislation making it easier to put self-driving cars on public roads.

Arizona has little inclement weather.

Who else is testing self-driving cars?

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission slapped Uber's parent company with an $8.9 million penalty in November 2017 after a probe determined the ride-hailing service had hired about 60 drivers with felony convictions. The company also tests in Pittsburgh and Toronto.

Gina Fiandaca, Commissioner of the Boston Transportation Department, had asked companies testing driverless cars in Boston to take a break after the Uber accident.
