How to win prizes in San Bernardino Public Library's summer reading program

Library starts summer reading off with a bang

Summer is just around the corner and the bulk of the Lawrence Public Library's Youth Services department went out into the wild - aka United States dollars 497 - to promote the Summer Reading Program. Participants can sign up and track the amount read either by minute for children and teens or pages for adults.

Many libraries receive a small amount of money through the institute grant annually in OR (typically between $1,000 to $5,000 per library based on population served) as an annual grant called the Ready to Read grant.

For children birth to age 3, Grove said the summer program builds on the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative started previous year, encouraging parents to read to babies and toddlers. "We're all signed up for the reading program, and now it's time to have fun". "We do six weeks [of programming], June 8 to July 21".

Readers also have a chance at winning the Flavors of New Orleans Grand Prize: a Best Choice set of porcelain enamel cast iron casserole/Dutch oven, gratin and griddle pan; a copy of "Kevin Belton's Big Flavors of New Orleans" by Kevin Belton and Rhonda Findley; and a sampling of flavors from New Orleans.

Participating children can read to earn books for themselves, which the Sanibel Public Library Foundation then matches with books for the Golisano Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program is always open at Allerton Public Library District.

She explained that reading over the summer has been shown to help children maintain their current reading level rather than slipping a level behind, helps to increase word acquisition and more. Movies will be family-friendly and will begin at 3 p.m. Popcorn and a drink will be provided. Scratch Cupcakery's mobile cupcake truck also will offer 12 flavors; the library will receive a portion of cupcake sales at the event. Children up to 5 years can register anytime to read for the open-ended program.

"We had a huge increase all across the board previous year", Hamilton said.

Grove said Oak Park parents are looking to make children into more socially conscious readers, and these types of challenges, and related social justice-themed events, have resonated with patrons.

-Magician Rick Eugene will amaze us on Monday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m.in the Joan Kuyper Farver Auditorium. When I say that I am talking to legislators about libraries, the first thing people ask me is if libraries are in trouble.

"The school district and CCPL are determined to keep children engaged in reading through the summer".

Not wanting to rest on my laurels and read the same book again (although I am sure they would love it), a quest was undertaken to find a new book that would be just as wonderful.

The summer months are normally considered by elementary, middle and high school students to be a time of respite from hitting the books.
