In election victory speech, Erdogan says Turkey will advance in Syria

President Erdogan has had opponents arrested and jailed

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won sweeping new executive powers after his victory in landmark elections on Sunday.

Defeated opposition candidate Muharrem Ince said Turkey was now entering a unsafe period of "one-man rule".

Erdogan reiterated his commitment to "fight terroristic organisations", "to continue the fight to make the Syrian grounds freer" and to increase the "international prestige" of Turkey, saying: "Turkey has no moment to waste, we know that".

Mr Ince received just 31%, despite a lively campaign attracting huge crowds.

Erdogan has been a strong supporter of Hamas.

But the 64-year-old has also polarised opinion, cracking down on opponents and putting some 160,000 people in jail. It effectively means one man controls the entire state machinery without any meaningful separation of powers.

His main rival said Monday he accepted results handing victory to the Turkish strongman in the first round, urging him to be a leader of all Turks. Erdoğan won 52.6 percent of the presidential ballots, which broadly tracks with the 51.4 percent support for his constitutional reforms in the April 2017 referendum.

Several world leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, President of Bosnian presidency Bakir Izetbegovic, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, Hungary's nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Jordan's King Abdullah II and Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain.

Additionally, as NPR's Peter Kenyon reported, the new system grants Erdogan the possibility of running for a third term "should parliament call snap elections in his final term".

In view of the mobilization and enthusiasm of the opposition, expectations were high that the race could be forced into a second round, but Erdogan managed to pass the necessary 50 percent threshold.

For now, though, this is Mr Erdogan's time.

Turkey's currency has fallen some 20% this year against the dollar. The primary challenge for the opposition will be to quickly resurrect itself out of the trauma of this defeat.

How did the opposition react?

But the leading opposition party said it believes the results for the presidential elections are incomplete and may go to a second round. "We have switched literally to a one-man regime".

Erdogan swept the Sunday presidential polls while his ruling party and its nationalist allies secured a majority in parliament.

How was the election conducted?

Polling stations were due to close at 1400 GMT, with the first results expected late in the evening.

Rumours that the vote had been rigged were spread by critics, who suggest that voter fraud and intimidation has taken place.

Turnout was high at around 87 per cent for both contests, the state broadcaster said.

The AKP government imposed emergency law after the 2016 coup attempt and has extended it seven times since.

"I hope nobody will try to cast a shadow on the results and harm democracy in order to hide their own failure". These two parties will have 146 and 43 seats in parliament, respectively.

Demirtas, who has been in pretrial detention since November 2016 on terror-related charges, was forced to lead his campaign from prison and won 8.4 per cent of the presidential vote.

The biggest issue for voters was the economy.

Terrorism was another key issue, as Turkey faces attacks from Kurdish militants and the jihadists of the Islamic State group.

The Turkish leader is accused by critics of adopting increasingly authoritarian tactics but is loved by supporters for bringing prosperity and stability to the country that lies at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. "Here we hardly feel the state of emergency that's still ongoing".
